Holy hell, what a journey Nocte Obducta has crafted with "Irrlicht (Es Schlägt Dem Mond Ein Kaltes Herz)"!This thirteenth full-length brings the band's sound back towards their hardcore punk roots, mixing in a liberal helping of psychedelia, creating something that's genuinely mesmerizing and unsettling in equal measure.The opener "Zurück im bizarren Theater" blends dirty guitars and steady drums together for a sound that blends black metal with a healthy dose of punk, setting the stage for what's basically a theatrical descent into madness. The way Marcel Breuer and his crew navigate betweenDoom/Death touches reminiscent of very early Anathema or Paradise Lostand their signature avant-garde black metal approach is nothing short of brilliant.

What really gets me pumped about this record is how it refuses to play by anyone's rules.Tracks like "Der alte Traum" make use of denser bass sounds and hazier guitar tones, moving away from the black metal sound with a great, psychedelic twist, while"Bei Den Ruinen" goes even further with the melodic but experimental side, and "Noch" closes the album with really warm melancholic guitars.This is easily one of the strongest Nocte Obducta releases to date, and considering their incredible catalog spanning 25 years, that's saying something massive. The production feels deliberately raw and unpolished, which only adds to the album's haunting atmosphere.
